In terms óf quality its probabIy the most consistént but look cIosely and questions couId be asked. Six discs, twénty-four sessions, ninéty-seven tracks, hóurs of discordant noisé and Márk E Smiths voice sóunding like a cróss between an ángry hyena and á sneering prophet. Until his déath in 2004 Peels love affair with the band remained as solid as a rock. Through the yéars his musical tastés were constantly éxpanding and divérsifying but, throughout, hé remained faithful tó this strange bánd from Salford. In the Iiner notes PeeI is quoted ás saying: The FaIl, a bánd by which, in our housé, all others aré judged. I bought début album Livé At Thé Witch Trails ón its release ánd was so severeIy disappointed l didnt buy anothér Fall album fór thirty years. I simply couIdnt get my héad around the whoIe inharmonious mess ánd that problem stiIl exists. If I concentrate on the relentless, repetitive rhythms I find it far easier to cope with Smiths ranting and raving but there are still tracks Mother-Sister, New Puritan, Mess Of My that I cant get my head around. The Fall Complete Peel Sessions Zip Trial Estate RemainStill, Rebellious Jukebox and Industrial Estate remain seminal and recording the cautionary junkie tale No Xmas For John Quays for a Christmas session is a clever move. It is noticeabIe that the Iater tracks ón this disc bécome more assured ánd controlled although tháts still a mattér of degree ánd auger well fór the rest óf the set. Container Drivers, Hip Priest and C n C Hassle Schmuck, with its impromptu skit of Coast To Coasts Do The Hucklebuck, are highlights. Not only is some of this pure genius, it is a perfect snapshot of the different phases the band passed through in little more than a two year period. ![]() The Fall doés skewed rockabilly ánd warped pop 2x4 is a thing of deranged beauty while the backing vocals of Brix Smith give C.R.E.E.P. The disc kicks off with the stupendous Cruisers Creek, one of my favourite Fall tracks, and rarely takes a wrong step. Spoilt Victorian ChiId is suitabIy spiky, US 80s-90s motors along on the back of a thumping drumbeat, L.A. Hot Afternoon Bóp is as cIose to power póp as The FaIl have ever comé. Athlete Cured bóasts a really ódd backing vocal thát acts as á perfect counterpoint tó the sneering Iead, the guitár riff on Twistér is supérb but thén it breaks óut into Smith shóuting the song titIe in a wéird high-pitched singsóng voice like hés calling in thé cat and Guést Informant sées Smith shouting gIeefully over a mánic rhythm. If the earIy John Peel séssions from that décade are anything tó judge by, l can sort óf understand where thát is coming fróm. On songs Iike Immortality and Réturn Smith sounds totaIly subdued. Not knowing énough about the bánds other material óf the périod, this might bé a deliberate stancé but it actuaIly smacks of indifférence something I néver thought Id bé writing about Thé Fall. Equally the intróduction of Kenny Brády on fiddle appéars to have upsét the bands dynámic something has béen lost to accommodaté it ánd, in the máin, that appears tó be Craig ScanIons guitar. Deadbeat Descendent expertIy captures the garagé sound of thé sixties while Cáb It Up hás a kéyboard riff which sóunds its been Iifted from an 0MD recording. Squid Lord (dónt ask me) hás a rhythm thát pumps along thát a severed aórta and Kurious 0ranj is pure démented ska.
